How to Set the Hole Position in Water Polo

Introduction

Lean back into your defender and set yourself to control the ball. The hole set is the axis of the water polo offense.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Position yourself in front of the opposing team's goal cage, two meters out.
2

Step Two

Keep your back facing the goal and make sure your defender is behind you. If he is in front of you, you need to turn him or swim around him. If you are unable to do this, swim out of the hole and let someone else set.
3

Step Three

Lean back with your shoulders into your defender and keep your hips out in front of you. You want your hips out so you can quickly lift you body up and away from your defender.
4

Step Four

Turn you shoulder into your defender and stretch out your other arm to receive a wet pass. All passes to the hole player should be wet, meaning they land in the water, not in his hand.
5

Step Five

Watch out for perimeter defenders sloughing off their opponents to double-team you. If this happens call out the slough so your teammates can get the ball to the open player.
6

Step Six

Call out "hole set" - when you are open - for your teammates to pass you the ball. From there you can shoot, turn, or draw a foul.
