How to Practice the Right Technique for Plies

Introduction

The plie is a movement at the core of classical ballet. Small or large, it can be performed in any position, first through fifth. Its downward body motion allows for a wide range of arm direction. Plies are one of the first steps that beginners learn. They are also complex and physically demanding, because the body must preserve turnout during vertical moves. Learn to plie the right way.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Take a Class

Steps

1

Step One

Get a feel for a real ballet class before you sign up by watching a DVD. "Ballet Boot Camp" at Amazon shows you what it takes (see Resources below).
2

Step Two

Interview dance instructors to see which offer the best instruction in ballet basics, such as positioning and fundamental moves like plies. Good technique here will affect the rest of your dance experience.
3

Step Three

Enroll in group lessons. Ask your instructor to tell you if you are performing basic positions and steps correctly.

Practice at Home

Steps

1

Step One

Refresh your memory on plie technique. Keep a manual of the elements of ballet at home, such as "Basic Ballet" by Joyce Mackie at Amazon, which describes the right steps in text and photos (see Resources below).
2

Step Two

Practice demi (small) plies, starting in first position and working your way up. Concentrate on your turnout, which must be maintained along with your speed, in both up and down motion.
3

Step Three

Practice grande (large) plies, starting in first position. With a deeper bend, the heels must come off the floor. Constant speed is required, despite the larger pull of gravity.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Visualize yourself as toast in a toaster as you drop into your plie. This will keep you from tilting.
  • Choose a dance studio that can meet your goals, whether you are casual or passionate about ballet technique.
  • Practice is the most important element in learning ballet.
  • Repeating practice with incorrect technique for the plie can cause musculoskeletal problems. This is why it is best for beginners to learn the right way from an instructor in person.
  • Never sink so deeply that you sit on your heels. You could tear major muscles.

Overall Things You'll Need

  • Basic knowledge of ballet positions
  • Access to a ballet instructor
  • Small practice space
