How to Play Third Base in Baseball
Introduction
Third base is called baseball's hot corner because anyone playing the position must be ready to react instinctively to hot shots and screaming line drives. Often, a third baseman is also one of his team's heavy hitters. It's a demanding position that requires good instincts, a great glove and a strong throwing arm, as the throw to first base is the longest on the infield.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
1
Step One
Start by learning to play catch skillfully. A third baseman must also learn early on how to field sharp ground balls.
2
Step Two
Work on fielding skills and making the throw to first base even when in youth leagues. Start with balls hit right at you, and progress to sharp grounders that require backhand fielding. Repetition, even early on, builds a foundation of skills that can turn a good ball player into a great one.
3
Step Three
Try to play catch and field ground balls every day. Play long catch to increase arm strength.
4
Step Four
Work diligently on skills as a hitter. Use sessions of soft pitch, hitting whiffle balls and practice at batting cages to develop hand eye coordination.
5
Step Five
Eliminate any fear of ground balls because at third base they arrive quicker than anywhere else.
