How to Play Guitar

Introduction

The guitar is the most popular instrument to learn how to play. Most everyone wants to be a rock star, and the guitar has the greatest mystique of all instruments.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need

  • A guitar
  • A guitar pick

Steps

1

Step One

First, get yourself a guitar. If a child is learning how to play, a classical guitar is a good idea because nylon strings are much easier on young fingers than steel strings. Good electric guitars are easier to play than acoustic guitars as well, as there is much better actiona??the space between the string and the fretboard.
2

Step Two

Either get a guitar teacher, buy a book, or find a computer tutorial. Cost is a factor for any of these, especially one on one instruction. This article is about how to do it yourself.
3

Step Three

Start simple. Really. It may be embarrassing to be playing a??Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,a?? but you want to get the hang of plucking notes with one hand and hitting the notes on the fretboard.
4

Step Four

Once you get the hang of that, learn scales. Not the most exciting part of learning guitar, but it will really help guitar solos without hitting wrong notes.
5

Step Five

The most common chords to begin with are G, A, C, and D. Bar chords come later as they are much more strenuous. There are plenty of popular songs that use combinations of those four chords. After that you can branch off into more complicated chords. Youa??ll want to practice playing D to C to G, or any other combinationa??the idea is to form the chord quickly.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Play songs youa??re familiar with. Buy songbooks of your favorite bandsa??but make sure the songbooks include the chords, not just the notes. The Beatles songbook is a good place to start, especially the a??Rubber Soula?? songbook. More modern songbooks might mainly consist of bar chords. Acoustic-based records are the best place to start.
  • It may take some time, and some pain, to build up calluses on your fingertips, but the more you play the stronger your fingers will get.

How to Play Guitar

Introduction

So you want to play the guitar? Every type of guitar has its specific methodology, but in the end, the string instruments are essentially similar and the same music theory applies to all of them. Here are some basic ways to learn how to play the guitar, starting from never having played before.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Steps

1

Step One

Recognize the chromatic musical scale as applied to the fretboard. While this sounds complicated, it's really just the foundation of playing anything (notes or chords) on the guitar. It goes ABCDEFG and back to A again. Find out about this scale and locate each note (ABCDEFG) on the fretboard.
2

Step Two

Find out about chords and how to play them. A chord is just a collection of notes that results in the sound of a specific chromatic note. For example, putting your fingers on the second fret of the second, third, and fourth strings lets you play an A chord by strumming all six of the strings at the same time. Learn the basic ABCDEFG chords.
3

Step Three

Learn about major and minor. Every one of the seven chords has two versions, one is major and the other is minor. The chord described above is an A major. To make the A chord minor, take your finger one fret down on the fourth string. Play both and listen to the difference.
4

Step Four

Experiment with fingering techniques. Fingering is the way you hold your fingers on the frets with your left hand to produce chords (unless you're left handed). You may want to follow fingering techniques laid out in books until you are confident you know how to frame guitar music yourself.
5

Step Five

Experiment with picking/strumming techniques. When you have learned to change chords quickly, you'll probably start to experiment with picking out single notes, either with a guitar pick or with your fingers. There are many different ways to get different sounds out of the guitar. When you have graduated to this step in learning guitar, you're well on your way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go at your own pace. Don't feel hurried or stressed. Playing guitar should be fun.
