How to Plan a Visit to the Seattle Art Museum

Introduction

The Seattle Art Museum, also known as SAM, is located in the heart of downtown Seattle. The museum features special and permanent collections, free days, interesting architecture and many educational programs. Museums of this magnitude can be overwhelming. Being informed before your visit will help you keep your composure and make the most of your day.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Camera
  • Museum map
  • Computer with Web access

Steps

1

Step One

Sign up to get the museum's email newsletter. This will keep you informed of new exhibits and activities that are happening at SAM. See "Who Can Help" below for more information.
2

Step Two

Start by exploring the special exhibits. They are generally only available for viewing for a short time.
3

Step Three

Plan on viewing the permanent collections at a time when there is not a special exhibit you care to see or after you have seen the special exhibits. This will allow you to really take your time and enjoy the art.
4

Step Four

Visit the museum on the first Friday of the month and take in the First Friday Lecture. The lecture starts at 10:30 a.m. and is in the Plestcheeff Auditorium.
5

Step Five

Visit the two free floors after you have seen the special and permanent collections. Here you will find work by contemporary artists.
6

Step Six

Become a member of the museum if you intend to visit frequently. This allows you to take advantage of special members only events.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow yourself at least 4 hours to see the museum so that you are not rushed.
