How to Plan a Trip to the Seattle Asian Art Museum

Introduction

The Seattle Asian Art Museum is an extension of the Seattle Art Museum. It is located in Seattle's Volunteer Park. True to its name, the Asian Art Museum focuses on Asian art of varying mediums. Like the Seattle Art Museum, the Asian Art Museum has permanent and rotating exhibits. Be transported to the world of Asia and its history through the amazing pieces of art on display.

Step One

Park at Volunteer Park for free. The park entrance is located at 14th Avenue and East Prospect street. If you would rather sit back and relax on your trip to the museum, take the number 10 bus route from downtown Seattle. Use the following numbers to receive detailed information. For the Metro transit system, call (205) 553-3000. For the Sound Transit, call (206) 398-5000, and for the Community Transit call (206) 353-7433.

Step Two

Contact the museum at (206) 654-3123 for hearing-impaired services. With two weeks advance notice, a sign language tour is available. All Seattle Art Museums are wheelchair accessible. There are designated parking spots for disabled patrons. Wheel chairs are available for loan at the information desk.

Step Three

Visit the museum Tuesday through Sunday. The first Thursday of each month and the first Saturday are free of admission charges. Admission is free on the first Friday of every month for Seniors. The museum holiday schedule varies.

Step Four

The Seattle Asian Art Museum Shop is spacious and full of neat surprises. Enter the Shop from street level on First Avenue or through Sarkowsky Hall. Featured products are from local and international artists. Find jewelry, sculptures, books and more in the museum store. Also available are unique products that are inspired by the current special exhibition.

Step Five

Eat lunch at the Taste Cafe. The cafe is open Tuesday through Sunday. It is always closed on the first and second Thursdays of the month. Try Asian inspired cuisine like a Peking duck wrap or Teriyaki Bento. If your taste buds seek less excitement than that, turkey sandwiches, espresso and a variety of treats are available. No reservations are necessary at the cafe.

Step Six

Visiting the museum with a group of 10 or more requires advanced reservations. These reservations should be made a minimum of two weeks in advance. Adult group visits are not available on Tuesdays. Group sizes are a minimum of 10 and maximums vary with each exhibition. Call (206) 344-5260 to get group entry times and to schedule a reservation. Groups do receive an entry fee discount which varies according to group size. Group dining is also available and again requires advanced reservations. Call (206) 654-3190 for tables that seat six to ten, or for private parties call (206) 654-3140.

  • For weekday visits, call ahead to check for school field trips and avoid those days.
