How to Pitch a Novel to an Agent
Introduction
The novel is finally written, and now it's time to sell it. Most publishers do not accept unagented manuscripts, so you should start by pitching the novel to an agent. A pitch is the chance to briefly describe your novel to an agent in a way that will make him or her want to see the entire book. Being prepared, professional and persistent will help you make a winning pitch.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Summarize your book in a few sentences. Keep it as simple as possible, but do hit on any plot twists, major scenes or anything that makes your novel stand out. Mention any books you might compare your novel to.
2
Step Two
Practice your pitch with a friend. Iron out any problems before meeting with the agent. Anticipate questions and answers.
3
Step Three
Write at least three chapters of the novel and a synopsis. If the agent is interested, he will ask to see more, and you will have something to give him.
4
Step Four
Know the agent's area of expertise. Don't pitch your romance novel to an agent that represents only science fiction or nonfiction.
5
Step Five
Follow up with a thank you note. If you don't hear from the agent in 30 days, follow up with a letter or phone call.
Tips & Warnings
- Always get a business card from the agent at the end of the pitch session. This will give you the agent's contact information for follow-up.
- Make notes immediately following the pitch session so you can remember the details. Refer to them during your follow up.
