How to Pedal the Correct Revolutions Per Minute
Introduction
To get the most out of your pedal power, learn to pedal the correct revolutions per minute. Under and over pedalling will result in quicker muscle fatigue and shorter rides.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Learn to estimate your revolutions per minute(rpm's). Look at your watch while pedalling, time off ten seconds, count your pedal strokes every time your right foot gets to the height of its' revolution and multiply that number by six.
2
Step Two
Buy a bike computer if you want the most accuracy of rpm's. A computer will also give you other pertinent information such as speed and distance ridden.
3
Step Three
Try to average 80 to 90 rpm's while biking most terrain.
4
Step Four
Shift to a harder gear on downhills and an easier gear on uphills to keep a constant rpm rate.
5
Step Five
Increase your revolutions to about 120 per minute for the most pedal efficiency while sprinting.
Tips & Warnings
- Get a feel for biking at certain rpm's. That way you can focus on the terrain and scenery instead of on your pedalling.
- Maintain a constant rate of about 85 rpm's to feel your best while pedalling longer distances.
