How to Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit in Colorado

Introduction

There are several ways to qualify for a disabled parking permit in Colorado. You need a valid medical certification of legal blindness, limited mobility, pulmonary restriction or cardiac condition. You are eligible if you cannot walk without an assistive device such as a wheelchair, cane or brace. Mobility impairment due to arthritic, neurological or orthopedic conditions also qualifies. Obtaining a disabled parking permit is a relatively simple process--follow these steps to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Temporary or Permanent Placard

Steps

1

Step One

Meet one of Colorado's qualifications for impaired vision, limited mobility or other qualifying condition.
2

Step Two

Print the Application for Persons with Disabilities Parking Privileges form online and complete the top portion. Select a qualifying condition and indicate whether you would like to receive 1 or 2 placards.
3

Step Three

Take the form to a licensed physician or other valid medical provider who can certify your condition and sign the application.
4

Step Four

Submit the application to your local motor vehicle office. You will receive a red placard for a temporary permit or blue for permanent disability. There is no fee for either temporary or permanent placards.
5

Step Five

Hang the placard from the rearview mirror when parking in a parking space reserved for the disabled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Temporary permits are valid for up to 90 days. Permanent placards expire after 3 years.
  • You may use your placard without owning or driving the vehicle you are in, but carry the Disability Placard receipt as proof of ownership.
  • Do not lend the parking permit to anyone. Misuse of a parking permit is subject to a fine and may result in the placard being confiscated.
  • Do not leave the placard hanging on your rearview mirror while driving.
  • If your placard is stolen, you must file a police report and notify a motor vehicle office immediately.
