How to Make the Most Out of a Library Card
Introduction
Today having a library card means much more than just checking out books. Most libraries provide many other services for their patrons at absolutely no cost. If you are visiting your library just to borrow books, you are missing out on the additional great things they have to offer.

Steps
1
Step One
Check out a DVD or video from their extensive collection. Movie rental companies charge high fees to rent their movies. Libraries allow their patrons to borrow movies at little to no cost.
2
Step Two
Take your child to story time. Kids get a chance to sit around and listen to classic children's stories as well as sing songs. Puppet shows are also a common occurrence at libraries.
3
Step Three
Sign up for a literacy program. If you or someone you know has a problem reading, this can help. Tutors are available at no charge to help adults with reading difficulties.
4
Step Four
Use the library's free Internet access. This service allows students and others to use the library computers for research or other personal use, such as checking email.
5
Step Five
Participate in a tax assistance program. Library patrons can participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Volunteers are available between February and April to help people file their tax returns.
Tips & Warnings
- Tours of the library are ideal for young children. This introduces them to how the library works and lets them know what kinds of activities they have for children.
- Sign up for both a local and a county library card. Each library will offer different services.
