How to Make a Countdown Calendar
Introduction
We will use items from around your house to make a pretty countdown towards Christmas (or any other special occasion). My five year old is always asking me "how long until x occurs?" This will help solve that problem.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Things You'll Need
- posterboard or large cardboard
- markers
- folded origami or other small decorative items
- thematic stickers (optional)
- scissors
- glue or tape
Steps
1
Step One
Decide the occasion you are counting down towards. We usually use it for Christmas, and this example is Christmas, but you can use it for counting down for any special holiday or birthday.
2
Step Two
Decide on a central picture for your calendar. The outline of a Christmas tree is easy to draw. Draw your outline.
3
Step Three
Make boxes for the days left until the occasion. Mine are usually about 2 inches by 2 inches. You can line them up straight or just put them randomly on the blank space around the tree. One box for each day.
4
Step Four
Decorate your central symbol with folded origami (something we have a lot of around here) or anything your child thinks is beautiful. Cut out pictures from magazines, or collect small toys, or anything. Tape them or glue them to the poster.
5
Step Five
Hang it on the wall or the refrigerator in easy reach of the child. Each day stick a sticker in a box, or color it in, or x it out. When they are all filled up your day is here!

How to Make a Countdown Calendar
Introduction
A countdown calendar is one way to mark time from the present to an important event in the future. The countdown begins when you pull the first item off the calendar. As the countdown progresses, the calendar gets shorter and shorter.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need
- Stapler
- Writing utensil
Steps
1
Step One
Determine the amount of time, and decide how to measure it. A countdown calendar can be based on the number of days, the number of hours or the number of minutes until the event.
2
Step Two
Calculate the number. Once you know how you plan to measure the time, you need to calculate how many units there are between the present moment and the future event. For example, if you are counting down days, you count how many days from the current day to the day of the event.
3
Step Three
Select a representation. You need to print and cut out a design or purchase items that can be stapled together to form the countdown calendar. Choose an item that represents the event. You need one item per unit that you calculated in step 2.
4
Step Four
Choose a base. The base of the countdown calendar can be any item you choose. You can use an actual calendar or a larger version of your representation item. Write the event on the base.
5
Step Five
Staple the items together in a straight line. Once you have done, this you need to staple the countdown calendar to the base.
6
Step Six
Number the countdown items. Write the last measurement of time on the first item stapled to the base. Continue sequentially until you reach your current moment in time.
7
Step Seven
Pull 1 item off. For each unit of time that passes, pull off 1 countdown marker. You will pull the last item off at the moment for the event and be left with the base indicating that the countdown is complete.
