How to Join the Congressional Black Caucus

Introduction

The Congressional Black Caucus is open only to African-American members of Congress. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) is a non-profit institute educating potential leaders and promoting communication between legislators, business owners, and minority groups to create a positive future for black communities across the United States. The CBCF is funded by a variety of fund-raisers and through corporate underwriting. The Annual Legislative Conference is sponsored by the CBCF and serves as a national forum to discuss current issues.

Ways to Join the Congressional Black Caucus

Step One

Get involved in your community by donating money to help the Congressional Black Caucus fulfill their goals of educating future leaders. Without financial support the CBCF would not exist. Consider donating as a way to join the fight to keep the nation's African-American communities growing in a positive direction.

Step Two

Volunteer for the ALC or Annual Legislative Conference. This annual conference serves as a national forum for political leaders and representatives of independent communities. Some common volunteer opportunities are hosting, administrative, registration and greeters.

Step Three

Become a friend of the Congressional Black Caucus by sponsoring a particular issue or by contributing a large amount of money into the general fund. You will be formally recognized as a public friend and will enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting a great cause in a multitude of communities.

Step Four

Enhance your participation in the political and civic system. You can participate in a variety of ways to support the Congressional Black Caucus. Some examples are writing your Senator, starting an online petition or obtaining contact information from U.S. House members in your state.

Step Five

Contribute to the CBCF Katrina Relief Fund. The CBCF is a member of ReBuild Hope NOW, which is a coalition of black organizations that are bringing help and money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina to rebuild their homes and businesses. CBCF's goal is to raise one million dollars.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • You do not have to be of African-American descent to join the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.
  • Although the official stance of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is non-partisan, it is almost exclusively adherent to Democratic principles.
  • Not all filers will have the opportunity to use the tax write-off. For example, if you claim the standard deduction, you are not allowed to write off contributions.
