How to Join a Burning Man Discussion List

Introduction

Community is at the heart of the annual Burning Man festival, and during the 8 days of the event, the community atmosphere is palpable in Black Rock City. During the remaining 51 weeks of the year, the Burning Man community lives on in a variety of ways. You can join the Burning Man Discussion List, also known as the "Burnman-list," to participate in an important virtual part of the process.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Join the Burning Man Discussion List

Steps

1

Step One

Subscribe to the Burning Man Discussion List early in your interaction with Burning Man, as a way of keeping up to date on festival information and opportunities to participate and volunteer before the festival. Join by visiting the Burnman-list Info Page (see Resources below). Provide your email address and be prepared to confirm your subscription a few seconds later.
2

Step Two

Keep in mind that, unlike most such Internet discussion lists, everyone who interacts with each other on the Burning Man discussion list stands a reasonable chance of meeting up with each other in the flesh at a future festival. Burning Man is all about self-expression, but you should feel free to be a reader, also known as a lurker, while you get to know the culture of the list.
3

Step Three

Post a message to the list, when you are ready to do so, by writing your message and emailing it to burnman-list@dioxine.net.
4

Step Four

Unsubscribe from the list, get a password reminder or change your subscription options by returning to the Burnman-list Info Page, scrolling to the bottom of the page and entering your subscription email address, then clicking on the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • A "discussion list," also known as a forum or bulletin board, is simply a device that allows its members to send messages to each other and to track them with content-related threads.
  • The Burning Man Discussion List is an unmoderated list which is not run by the Burning Man Project. Expect up to 100 posts a day with dozens of emails in multiple threads each day, many of which are "off-topic." Unless you are prepared for this much traffic in your inbox, you should opt to receive list mail batched in a daily digest.
