Steps

1

Step One

Uprock properly without having to think about it. The uprock is the start of many breakdancing sessions.
2

Step Two

Make sure you have the six-step (downrock) learned well enough to perform at any time without thinking about it.
3

Step Three

Practice gliding until you can move with ease.
4

Step Four

Create your own sense of style for breakdancing by adding your own flare to the basics.
5

Step Five

Prepare yourself with the best breakdance routine you can produce for your skill level. You will need to show a new crew your skills before you can join the crew.

Steps

1

Step One

Search for local crews in your area. Many crews have websites for you to visit.
2

Step Two

Visit online breakdancing crew community websites like breakdancecrew.com (see Resources below). You will meet fellow breakdancers and communicate through message boards.
3

Step Three

Email crew members for one on one contact and answers to any questions you may have after meeting the crew members in an online community.
4

Step Four

Ask around to find out if there is a crew in your area you don't know about. If you are old enough to go to a club, visit local Hip-Hop clubs to meet people.
5

Step Five

Check with a local community center and/or college to find out if a crew is putting on an exhibition or when and where a crew meets.
6

Step Six

Show up to watch the crew practice when you have found a local crew.
7

Step Seven

Ask a crew member to show you some moves and show your interest in breakdancing and in the crew.
8

Step Eight

Ask if the crew is looking for new members and what you have to do to join.
9

Step Nine

Attend all crew practices and work hard to make yourself a valuable member of the crew.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't find a breakdance crew in your area, start your own crew with several of your friends. Starting with friends is the way most crews have started over the years.
  • Don't stay with a crew if you do not feel accepted by the other members or if they are engaging in activities outside of breakdancing that you are not comfortable with.
