How to Improve Artwork

Introduction

Unless artists are lucky enough to be a modern-day Leonardo da Vinci, most would like to improve their artwork. With a few simple tips and time set aside, any person with general artistic skills can learn to sharpen their ability.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Eraser

Steps

1

Step One

Practice, practice, practice; nothing is more beneficial to an artist than taking time to work on their skills. Try to find a place free of interference and set aside about an hour anywhere from a few days a week to every day.
2

Step Two

Try reproducing the artwork of an admired artist. This allows one to learn different styles and techniques.
3

Step Three

Work from real life. Have plenty of light available in the work area. Aim the light directly at the subject to cast shadows and add highlights, making the art appear more dimensional. Drawing from life helps every artistic style, not just those who want to draw realistically.
4

Step Four

Draw what is seen, not what the mind knows the object is supposed to be. In other words, a box may not necessarily look square but the mind will want to draw it that way. Drawing the negative space instead of the subject will help bring out the object's true shape.
5

Step Five

Work on shading, starting with the darkest area and working towards the lightest value. Don't be afraid to make the darkest areas truly black and the highlights white.
6

Step Six

Ask for help. An unbiased opinion can help point out places that need improvement. Don't take it personally, but instead see it as an opportunity to become a better artist. Being able to draw well sets the foundation to becoming a better artist in any medium.
