How to Identify Sculpture by Rodin

Introduction

The French sculptor Auguste Rodin broke with existing traditions in sculpture. His naturalism, unconventional poses and treatment of surfaces were different from the academic ideals of his time. He was controversial in his early career but achieved popularity and success in his lifetime. He is valued as one of the most important sculptors in the twentieth century. Step One

Look at the subject. Rodin was interested in the human figure. He sculpted partial figures, parts of the body and portraits.

Observe that his figures are in motion. Rodin worked from life and made quick sketches of his subjects. He was able to create transient poses and accidental effects.

Sense the emotion state of the subject. Rodin's work often shows physical and emotional distress.

Be aware of the surface texture. Clay was sometimes smooth and sometimes rough. Rodin often worked in marble, clay and bronze. His surface modeling was expressive using detailed, textured surfaces to convey emotion. He used light and shadow to create emotion.

Look at his early work. Start with the "Age of Bronze," a more traditional work shown at the Salon of 1877. It caused a scandal because it was so lifelike. Critics charged him with casting from a live model. Note that Rodin is realistic in proportion and modeling.

Study the bronze statue of "The Burghers of Calais," a replica of which stands outside the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Notice the exaggerated gestures and the lack of a pedestal so the viewers are on the same level as the figures. The informal poses and the casual arrangement of figures are typical of Rodin. Step Seven

Continue looking at his work. Study the "Gates of Hell" where a prototype for the famous statue "The Thinker" sits in the center of the lintel. Notice the dynamic movement of the figures writhing in torment. This contrasts with the brooding figure of the thinker in the center.

  • The best way to identify a Rodin is to see his sculpture up close. If possible, visit a museum that has a Rodin in its collection.
