How to Hold a Family Movie Night
Introduction
Families often have difficulty finding quality time to spend with each other. Here's a suggestion: Grab your calendar and circle one night for each week this month to gather your spouse and children for a family movie night.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Hold a family meeting to announce the beginning of regular family movie nights. To keep it from being Mom or Dad's thing, rotate the honors of choosing a movie. You might decide on guidelines, like no movies that the family has seen umpteen times, or restricting films with certain ratings.
2
Step Two
Decide on the frequency of movie nights. Weekly is optimal, but if your family just can't pin down one night of the week, aim for monthly. Mark it on your calendar. Vow to not allow jobs, friends or activities interfere with movie night, no exceptions. Consider the sacred with attendance mandatory.
3
Step Three
Plan a menu for movie night. Since movie snacks tend to be high fat and high sugar, balance them with a nutritious dinner beforehand. Or you can arrange for takeout to eat with the movie, particularly if time is tight.
4
Step Four
Turn off the telephones or at least silence them. Ask teens to leave cell phones in their rooms, so that the temptation to text their friends is removed.
5
Step Five
Give the movie your full attention. Show your family that you consider this family ritual important. Don't do chores while the movie plays.
6
Step Six
Remember intermissions. Bring back regular pauses for family movie night so that family members don't disappear in the bathroom or in search of the perfect snack.
