With more than 100 different categories to choose from, including collector, passenger, recreational, special interest and military, the road can bear your mark wherever you decide to go. Read on to learn how to get a specialty license plate in Colorado.

Step One

Log on to Colorado's official state government website.

Step Two

Navigate through the site by clicking "State Agencies," "Revenue," "Motor Vehicle" and "License Plates."

Scroll down the list of available specialty license plates. Click on the specialty license you may be in interested in obtaining. Read about eligibility requirements, fees, personalization policy and restrictions.

Step Four

Obtain an application for the specialty plate you are interested in acquiring. Select a plate application to download and print if it is present on the website. Colorado offers its own specialty license plate applications on its website, but for specialty plates that are sponsored by an outside organization, you may need to call the sponsoring organization, provide proof that you meet eligibility requirements and request that an application be mailed to you.

Step Five

Complete the application. Some of the information that you may be asked to provide includes your name, address, your vehicle's make, year, body, current plate number and vehicle identification number.

Gather all supplementary eligibility documentation, if applicable. Contact individuals of organizations that can certify your history of association, membership or involvement in the organization. Make copies of the documentation to send with your application.

Mail your completed application to the address on the application. Include all documentation. Do not send registration fees if you are not required. Only include fees that are associated with the organization.
