How to Get a Disabled License Plate in Colorado

Introduction

Colorado's roadways, with their mountains and scenic routes, provide drivers with quite the backdrop while driving. Don't let your disability inhibit you from experiencing all that Colorado has to offer. Apply for a disability license plate and simplify your journeys.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Logon to Colorado's official website (see Resources below).
2

Step Two

Navigate through the site by clicking "State Agencies," "Revenue," "Motor Vehicle," "Forms" and "Registration Forms by Name."
3

Step Three

Scroll down to the "Application for Persons With Disabilities Parking Privileges."
4

Step Four

Download and print the application.
5

Step Five

Write your name and address.
6

Step Six

Sign the application.
7

Step Seven

Take your application to a physician who is fully licensed to practice in Colorado.
8

Step Eight

Have your physician verify the nature of your disability by checking at least one condition under the criteria section that meets disability requirements. Make sure that your physician indicates whether you are permanently or temporarily disabled, signs the application, provides the location of his practice, medical license number and his contact information.
9

Step Nine

Decide whether you would like two disability license plates or one disability license plate and a placard. Check the preferred option on the second page.
10

Step Ten

Visit your local Motor Vehicle office. Provide proof that you own the vehicle on the application. Copies of the title or registration papers will suffice.
11

Step Eleven

Submit your application.
12

Step Twelve

Receive your disability license plates.
13

Step Thirteen

Trade your standard license plates for your disability license plates and use on receipt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Special disability plates are available to those who have served in the military. Contact your local Motor Vehicles office for more information on how to obtain them.
  • Your plates will need to be renewed every year to keep disability parking privileges.
