How to Finish a Patio with Rock Salt

Introduction

Using rock salt to finish a patio is one viable option if you have a concrete patio. Rock salt generally shouldn't be used to finish anything other than concrete, which limits its use, but it has relatively good results when used correctly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need

  • Rock salt

Steps

1

Step One

Pour the concrete for your patio to the desired area and height.
2

Step Two

Smooth out the surface of the still-wet concrete. This should be as even and as smooth as possible.
3

Step Three

Scatter rock salt on top of the concrete surface. The amount you apply will be the result of how you want your finished look to be. If you want it rougher and more textured, apply more salt. If you merely want an uneven surface, less rock salt can be used.
4

Step Four

Wait for the concrete to set completely. This may take hours or even days, depending on how much concrete you have used, and the climate of the area you live in.
5

Step Five

Wash off the rock salt when the concrete has set and it is safe to apply water. The salt should dissolve and leave a pattern of uneven pits and bumps in the patio surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many builders and contractors claim that finishing with rock salt harms and deteriorates concrete. So if you are looking for a long lasting and aesthetic appeal, you may want to reconsider finishing with rock salt.
  • Be careful not to wash away the salt until the concrete is able to be exposed to water. Trying to wash it away too soon could cause damage to the rest of the patio. Consult with a professional builder to find out a more specific drying time for your specific project.
