How to Enter Events at a State Fair

Introduction

State Fairs throughout the country encourage people of all ages to enter contests. Contests range from crafts and agriculture to livestock. State fairs have a long standing tradition of honoring those artisans, craftsmen, farmers and homemakers who keep American traditions alive and well.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need

  • State Fair Premium Book for the current year
  • Ideas for projects
  • Entry fees and forms

Steps

1

Step One

Research your fair's current premium book for categories available to enter. There is usually a great variety of events to choose from.
2

Step Two

Think about what you like to do and see if anything fits into a State Fair category. Do you make homemade jams or jellies each year? Are you a painter or quilt maker? There are usually categories for these things and lots more.
3

Step Three

Begin checking your State Fair's website for important dates and entry instructions. Entries and fees are usually due about a month before the fair opens.
4

Step Four

Prepare your entry form and fee, and mail to the appropriate fair address. Check to see when you must deliver your items before the fair begins.
5

Step Five

Experiment with different recipes for food categories and get opinions from family and friends as to what you should enter.
6

Step Six

Begin work on your project in plenty of time to be ready for delivery to the fair. If entering artwork, think about entering something completed during the year, rather than coming up with something new you have to rush to finish.
7

Step Seven

Follow all rules for ingredients, height requirements, age categories and matting and framing procedures. This is an important step to be sure your entry isn't disqualified.
8

Step Eight

Deliver your project to the fair on time using the appropriate entrance for contest entries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Compete in a category you are familiar with and have confidence in. If your family raves about your chocolate cake, think about entering it in the fair.
  • Use only the freshest and best ingredients when preparing food items for competition.
  • Encourage children to enter art work completed during the school year. The only thing you'll have to add is an appropriate frame.
