How to Drive the Hole in Water Polo
Introduction
Slide past your defender and swim toward the hole for a close shot on goal.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Wait for a foul in the hole position. This means the hole-man has three seconds to make a free throw, but cannot shoot.
2
Step Two
Face your defender with your hips up behind you in the water.
3
Step Three
Reach across and grab your defender's same wrist - right grabs right, left grabs left.
4
Step Four
Pull hard and fast on your defender's wrist to pull him toward you and to the side.
5
Step Five
Dive forward and to the opposite side of the hand you pulled with. Try to drive down and around your defender, quickly getting in front of him.
6
Step Six
Begin swimming toward the hole immediately, keeping your body in front of your defender at all times. Feel your defender on your back and try to keep him there by zigzagging as you drive forward.
7
Step Seven
Swim head-high freestyle, concentrating on the defender behind you. Be ready to receive the ball from the hole-man.
8
Step Eight
Receive the ball in the water from the hole-man and shoot a wet shot on goal.
Tips & Warnings
- If you fail to drive in front of your defender, make a sharp turn to the side and pop up for a rear-back shot.
- Be subtle when pulling your defender's wrist. This is an offensive foul, but it rarely gets noticed by the referee.
