How to Draw a Male Figure
Introduction
You can draw a male figure with the correct proportions by following a simple formula, although it will take some practice. Just follow the tips below.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Steps
1
Step One
Begin by placing 8 evenly-spaced, light dashes as guidelines spanning from the top of the paper to the bottom. This will be the height of the male figure. The feet will reach to the bottom dash, and the head will graze the top dash.
2
Step Two
Roughly sketch in the egg or oval shape of the head, making the jaw slightly squared. This should take up the space between dashes 7 and 8. The head of the figure will be proportionally one-eighth of the entire height.
3
Step Three
Put 2 dots to place the points of the shoulders about halfway between the dashes 6 and 7. Make the shoulders wide.
4
Step Four
Indicate the waist with 2 dots at the fourth dash. The waist for a man's figure should be just a little narrower than the shoulders. Place 2 dots halfway between dashes 4 and 5 for the hips. For a man's body, they should be about the same width as the waist.
5
Step Five
Place 2 dots, indicating where the knees are, near dash 6. Then place 2 dots at the dash 8, where the feet will land.
6
Step Six
Lightly connect the dots to draw the outline of the figure. Make sure to round out the edges. Fill out the thighs, calves, and feet.
7
Step Seven
Add the arms. The elbows should hit waist high, and the distance to the wrist should be about the same.
Tips & Warnings
- Move the placement of the dots around to get modified body postures. Raise one hip and place a hand on it, bend the arms or cross one leg over the other.
- Remember that every body has different proportions. Begin with this guideline and you can later modify to add distinguishing characteristics.
