How to Draw a 9-pointed Star

Introduction

Why make a 9-pointed star? If you have any Baha'i friends, you know that this is one of the commonly-used symbols in their religion.

Or maybe you just like the look of a many-pointed star for artistic reasons.

Use this easy method to make 3 different types of 9-pointed stars. Check out the ADAPTATIONS in the Tips section to find out how to make a star with ANY number of points that you wish!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need

  • paper
  • pencil
  • compass
  • ruler
  • protractor
  • eraser

Steps

1

Step One

First, gather your materials.
2

Step Two

All three stars begin the same way:

Make a small dot near the center of the page.
3

Step Three

Draw a light line through the dot.
4

Step Four

Use the compass to make a circle the size of the star you wish to draw, using the dot as your anchor (where the point of the compass sits).
5

Step Five

Use the protractor to make marks around the circle at 0°, 40°, 80°, 120°, 160°, 200°, 240°, 280°, and 320°. Note that you will make 9 marks - one for each point of the star.
6

Step Six

Number these marks counter-clockwise, beginning at 0°=1.
0°=1 40°=2 80°=3 120°=4 160°=5
200°=6 240°=7 280°=8 320°=9

From here, follow the directions for the star you would like to make.

Step Seven

3-TRIANGLE STAR:
(Steps 6-9)

1. Draw a triangle connecting points 1-4-7
8

Step Eight

2. Draw a second triangle connecting points 2-5-8
9

Step Nine

3. Draw a third triangle connecting points 3-6-9
10

Step Ten

4. Erase all extra lines, numbers, etc. until all you are left with is the star.
11

Step Eleven

CONTINUOUS-LINE STAR:
(Steps 11-12)

1. Draw one continuous line beginning and ending at point 1, following the pattern 1-5-9-4-8-3-7-2-6-1.
12

Step Twelve

2. Erase all extra lines, numbers, etc. until all you are left with is the star.
13

Step Thirteen

OUTLINE STAR:
(Steps 13-16)

1. Draw a smaller circle within the larger one, as shown.
14

Step Fourteen

2. Use the protractor to make marks around the circle at 20°, 60°, 100°, 140°, 180°, 220°, 260°, 300°, and 340°. Note that you will make 9 marks on the inner circle - one for each point of the star.
15

Step Fifteen

3. Draw one continuous line beginning at point 1, following the pattern: 1-A-2-B-3-C-4-D-5-E-6-F-7-G-8-H-9-I-1.
16

Step Sixteen

4. Erase all extra lines, numbers, etc. until all you are left with is the star.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • ADAPTATIONS: To make a star with any number of points you choose, simply divide the total number of degrees of a circle (always 360°) by the number of points you want.
  • 5-pointed star: 360° ÷ 5 = 72°. Therefore, make marks at 0°, 72°, 144°, 216°, and 288°
  • 6-pointed star: 360° ÷ 6 = 60°. Therefore, make marks at 0°, 60°, 120°, 180°, 240°, and 300°
  • Some stars, such as a 7-pointed star, will not work out to a whole number, so you will have to round it as closely as you can.
