How to Create a Silk Scarf Design
Introduction
The beauty of creating your own silk scarf design is that anything goes. Some people want to mimic intricate designs that they have seen, which is fine, but don't be afraid to try something new. It's the painting that makes the scarf beautiful, so simple repeated designs can be just as beautiful as detailed floral designs.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need
- Silk scarf
- Paper
- Pencil
- Resist or gutta
- Stretcher bars
Steps
1
Step One
Measure your silk scarf. You want to make sure you create a design that works with the shape of your scarf.
2
Step Two
Draw a picture or design that you would like to paint on the silk scarf. Some people choose to repeat the same designs on each end of the scarf while others create a flowing design from one end to the other.
3
Step Three
Transfer a drawing from paper to your silk scarf by taping the drawing to a window and positioning your scarf over the design. Trace your design onto the scarf with a pencil.
4
Step Four
Stretch your scarf on stretcher bars so that the fabric is taut. Trace your design with resist or gutta. These will stop the flow of dye or paint so you can fill in your design with different colors.
Tips & Warnings
- If you are using resist or gutta to outline your design, make sure your line is solid and not too thin. The dye wants to spread, and it will leak through your outline if it finds a weak spot.
- If drawing designs isn't your thing, try painting your scarf with the colors of your choice, then sparingly sprinkling table salt on the wet paint. Allow the scarf to dry and brush off the salt to reveal a beautiful, unique design.
