How to Clear a Paper Jam in an HP Laser Printer

Introduction

Laser printers represent the high-end of the printing market. They produce quality images and run quietly and quickly. Their speed can sometimes lead to frustrating paper jams, but clearing a paper jam in an HP laser printer is usually a simple and easy fix if you just follow these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Take out any paper that is not jammed. Remove the loose paper from the in and out paper trays to prevent any more paper from being pulled into the jam.
2

Step Two

Open the cover of your HP laser printer. This will give you access to the inner machinery of the printer and should unveil the jammed paper. If you do not see jammed paper, you may have another type of malfunction.
3

Step Three

Gently pull on the jammed paper. In many cases, it will come out easily.
4

Step Four

Move the rotors on the inside of the printer by pressing the flashing button on the housing of the printer. This may help to loosen any jammed paper.
5

Step Five

If the jam persists, unplug your HP laser printer. Youa??ll be able to pull more firmly on the paper with the power turned off. Be careful not to rip the paper.
6

Step Six

Attempt printing again. Refill the trays with paper and plug your printer back in to test its functionality.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not pull too hard on the jammed paper or you may cause damage to another mechanism in the printer.
  • If the paper rips while you're clearing the jam, take extra care to remove all the pieces and shreds from the printer. If pieces remain, they will keep your printer from working properly.
  • If many pieces of paper are jammed, you may have to remove a few individual sheets before they all come out. Try to pull from the middle of the jam.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Always use paper weights and types that have been approved for your printer. Laser printers in particular are sensitive to paper type, so consult the ownera??s manual or HP Web site to confirm the types of paper that are acceptable.
  • If the problem with your printer is not a paper jam, you might consider a professional repair person.
