How to Choose a Dog Photographer

Introduction

Since dogs are part of the family, it stands to reason we might want their portrait gracing our living room or to show them off to the relatives on a holiday card. However, not all photographers are equal. There are some important things to consider if you want your babies to look their best.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access

Steps

1

Step One

Ask friends or relatives who have hired dog photographers for a recommendation
2

Step Two

Check on line for photographers who specialize in dogs or pets. Most of the established ones have websites.
3

Step Three

Make sure they have enough experience photographing dogs (and dogs with their people, if you will be included)
4

Step Four

Meet the photographer in person with your dog for a consultation before setting up a session. Youa??ll be able to tell if he or she is genuinely a dog lover, has a general understanding of dog behavior and is experienced at handling dogs. If there will be an assistant, make sure the assistant is also experienced with dogs.
5

Step Five

Find out the methods the photographer will use to warm the dog up and to keep the session stress free. For instance, if they use treats.
6

Step Six

Review the photographera??s portfolio. Look for photos that capture the essence of what is unique about each doga??s personality. If you will be included, make sure they are skilled at conveying the essence of your relationship with your dog.
7

Step Seven

Discuss with the photographer the images he or she has in mind to shoot and how they will be designed after meeting your dog. If you have a particular theme in mind discuss it with them to find out if they have the appropriate backgrounds.
8

Step Eight

Decide if the session will take place in your home or their studio. Some photographers work only from your house with natural light.
9

Step Nine

Review all of the options and packages available including pricing, portrait sizes and session lengths.
10

Step Ten

Have the photographer shoot some sample images for you to view before making a decision. By doing this they can give you design ideas such as digital art and framing suggestions. If you are interested in note cards or holiday cards, for instance, ask them to show you how the images can be converted.

Tips & Warnings

  • The better your dog is with basic commands, the more time will be left for being creative.
  • Consider how obedient your dog is and schedule the session length accordingly. Allot extra time for shy dogs. Ita??s better to overbook than underbook.
  • No matter how skilled the photographer is, not all dogs may be right for a photo session
