How to Buy American Primitive Art
Introduction
American Primitive art, which ranges from paintings to sculpture to fabric art, has become a popular genre to collect. Art which is created by self-taught artists, working outside of the mainstream, is often defined as primitive art. In order to get your hands on some of this "outsider" art, you may have to track down artists who are not represented by traditional art galleries.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
1
Step One
Do your homework. Read books on American Primitive art to find out what type of art is considered American Primitive and which of the many types that you like best.
2
Step Two
Visit flea markets and garage sales. Since American Primitive art is created by individuals who are not mainstream artists, you can often pick up their pieces in these unusual places.
3
Step Three
Explore little country roads. The southern half of the U.S. is often considered the home of American Primitive art, with many artists selling their creations from their homes. They sometimes advertise with small signs on fence posts.
4
Step Four
Keep an eye on online auctions. EBay, biddington.com and artgavel.com, all allow you to shop and bid from home.
5
Step Five
Attend displays at museums and galleries. Although these typically have more mainstream artists, as the market for primitive art continues to grow, they will occasionally offer primitive art displays and sales.
Tips & Warnings
- Art is very subjective; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That makes you an expert on primitive art. The rule of thumb is: if you love it, buy it.
