How to Bulk Load Film

Introduction

Bulk loading film can be very challenging the first few times you do it. Navigating the film and all the necessary accessories in the dark gets easer with practice.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need

  • film
  • bulk loader
  • dark room
  • scissors
  • tape
  • film cassette

Steps

1

Step One

In a darkroom with all the lights off, unpackage the roll of film.
2

Step Two

Insert the roll of film into the bulk loader so the film unspools counterclockwise and threads through the opening to the film loading the section on the side of the bulk loader.
3

Step Three

Replace the lid on the bulk loader and fasten it shut. Shut the trap door.
4

Step Four

Take one end of a reusable film cassette to free the film spool. Open the door to the film loading compartment and tape the end of the film to the film spool. The tape should go completely around the spool and fasten to both sides of the film.
5

Step Five

Slip the film cassette over the film and spool and replace the end of the film cassette. Put the cassette inside the bulk loader and close or replace the door.
6

Step Six

Turn loader crank to pull film from the bulk roll to the cassette. After you have loaded as many frames of film as you want, open the bulk loader door and cut the film.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • After you are finished, cut the film at an angle on the free end of the film so it will fit the spool in your camera.
  • Steps 1-3 must be done in the darkroom or you will mess up the film
  • Steps 4+ can be done in a lighted room
