How to Browse Images With Paint Shop Pro

Introduction

Paint Shop Pro's built-in image browser makes it easy to find and manage graphic files. Not only can you display thumbnail images of all graphics within a folder, but you can sort the display by file name or property, select one or more files, copy or move images between folders, open them to be edited and delete them. These instructions are based on Version 9.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Basic Browsing

Steps

1

Step One

Open the browser in one of three ways: Select "Browse" from the "File" menu, press the "Ctrl" and "B" keys on your keyboard simultaneously or click the Browse button on the Standard toolbar.
2

Step Two

Click the "Maximize" button on the browser window to enlarge it to fill the entire workspace. The browser displays a tree of folders on the left with tabs labeled "File" and "Info" and a collection of thumbnails on the right corresponding to the folder that is highlighted in the folder tree.
3

Step Three

Select another folder in the tree to display thumbnails of the images within. If the right pane is blank, the folder doesn't have graphics in it.

Selecting Images

Steps

1

Step One

Click the thumbnail of any image to select it. The thumbnail will be highlighted with a box around it.
2

Step Two

Press the "Ctrl" key while clicking several thumbnails not contiguous to each other to select individual thumbnails.
3

Step Three

Hold down the "Shift" key and click two thumbnails, one after the other. Those thumbnails and all thumbnails between them will be selected.
4

Step Four

Hit the "Ctrl" and "A" keys simultaneously, or choose "Select All" from the "Edit" menu to select all the files in the displayed folder.
5

Step Five

Double-click any highlighted thumbnail to open its image for editing in the workspace.

Tips & Warnings

  • To select thumbnails by such characteristics as file name, file size or file type, choose "Select" from the "File" menu to display the Select dialog, from which you can pick the appropriate selection characteristics.
  • To copy a file, right-click the file, select "Copy To" from the pop-up menu and then select the folder to copy the image to.
  • To delete a selected file, press the "Ctrl" and "Delete" keys simultaneously.

Sorting Images

Steps

1

Step One

Choose "Sort" from the "File" menu to display the Thumbnail Sort dialog.
2

Step Two

Select "Ascending" or "Descending" for the primary and/or secondary sort order and the criterion for sorting from the "Sort condition" drop-down list.
3

Step Three

Click OK to sort the images.

Tips & Warnings

  • To move a thumbnail around in the display, select and drag it to the desired new location in the thumbnail display. By dragging it to a different folder in the folder tree, the corresponding file is moved into the new folder as well.
  • Thumbnails normally update automatically on opening the folder, except that new files are always added at the end and must be sorted into the existing thumbnails manually. To otherwise update the thumbnails, such as when a file was deleted in Windows Explorer, choose "Update Thumbnails" from the "File" menu or press the "F5" key.
