How to Book Train Travel from Montreal to New York

Introduction

New York, "The City That Never Sleeps," awaits your visit. You can travel by train in comfort and style, leaving Montreal in the morning and making it to the Big Apple in time to take in dinner and a show.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Book Your Train Travel from Montreal to New York

Steps

1

Step One

Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device. The Adirondack route will take you from Central Station in Montreal to Penn Station in New York in just under 10 hours.
2

Step Two

If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent (unfortunately, the Montreal station does not have a Quik-Trak kiosk). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you. Be sure to bring your reservation number when picking up tickets.

Tips & Warnings

  • You might want to consider purchasing a pre-paid cell phone for the trip. Most Amtrak trains offer Railfones, but using them can be expensive--up to $3 per minute! A pre-paid phone will enable you to stay in touch with friends or loved ones during your trip and alert them to any delays in your arrival in New York.
  • Keep in mind that the ticket office in Montreal is only open between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily.
  • Smoking is prohibited at all times on the train. However, you will be given the opportunity to smoke on the platform at stops along the way. Just be sure to stick close to the train and heed the call to board again.

Navigate Your Way Around New York

Steps

1

Step One

Emerge from your train at Penn Station in New York and follow the crowd (or the signs) to the upper floors. Penn Station is totally underground, with the main level two floors up from the track level.
2

Step Two

Get around New York by boarding the subway at the 34th Street exit. These days, the subway system is much safer, cleaner and cheaper than a cab.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Bring a camera. The Adirondack route winds through some very historic and scenic places in the Northeast Corridor and Hudson Valley, and photo opportunities abound.
  • Prepare to present identification at the U.S. border. Canadians and all other non-U.S. citizens are urged to carry a passport. You may also be required to comply with new U.S. Homeland Security procedures, such as having your digital photo and finger scan taken. Your local embassy or consulate can provide more information.
