How to Become a School Photographer

Introduction

So, you love kids and taking pictures. Then perhaps becoming a school photographer is for you. Preschools to high schools across the country enlist the services of school photographers to take individual and class portraits. There is always a demand for school photographers, so maybe now is the time to utilize your picture-taking skills and make a little money doing something you love.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Take photography courses to learn the technical aspects of photography. A degree is not mandatory to become a school photographer, but it doesn't hurt either. You'll learn, meet people who have the same interest and maybe make some contacts.
2

Step Two

Get a job as an assistant photographer. Work at weddings or other social functions. Do family portraits and even sporting events. Learn the craft. Get valuable experience and a feel for what the work entails.
3

Step Three

Enroll in school photography workshops. These can teach you not only the fundamentals of taking school pictures, but what to expect and how to successfully run your business.
4

Step Four

Apply to a school photography company such as Lifetouch. Some familiarity with photography equipment is desired, but training is also provided. This is a great hands-on experience and exposes you to all types of school photography, from preschool class pictures to high school portraits.
5

Step Five

Secure another job, unless a part-time income is all you need. School photography is seasonal; there may be months when there's no work. Prepare to supplement your income by working in another field of photography.
