How to Be an Avid Reader

Introduction

Avid readers take every opportunity to put their nose in a book. Avid readers also have a tendency to collect massive amounts of books and keep a stash of "to be read" (TBR) books. They love book talk, reading and meeting in the name of books. A few simple steps can make you an avid reader.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Amass a collection. Even if you don't have a lot of money, you can still amass a sizable home library. Thrift stores, department stores, online used book sellers, used book stores and online trading sites are great places to get cheap books.
2

Step Two

Read at every opportunity. The most motivated of avid readers carry a book with them at all times: to the bathroom, the grocery store and even to the movies. There are many dead moments in a day that you can capitalize on for some extra reading. Doctor's waiting rooms are great, as are grocery store lines.
3

Step Three

Enjoy the feel of books. Most avid readers disregard e-books, though many embrace books on tape. For many avid readers, there's nothing like the feel of a book in their hands, the smell of a crisp new book or the sound of someone reading a book to them.
4

Step Four

Talk about books with others. Whether you choose to join an online book discussion group or a face-to-face book club, find some fellow readers with whom you can talk about your reading and get recommendations. Talking about reading brings an additional level of joy for avid readers.
5

Step Five

Spread your love of books to others. Consider giving books you've read away to make room for new ones and provide those less fortunate with reading material. Illiteracy is an ongoing problem, so giving your books away to libraries and literacy organizations can benefit them.
