How to Be an Advocate for Same Sex Marriage in Utah

Introduction

Whether you are gay or lesbian, or just support the rights of your fellow citizens and live in Utah, there are things that you can do to advocate gay marriage.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Write letters to your congressional representative and senators. You also can leave messages for legislators in the Senate by calling (501) 682-2902. Or call the House of Representatives at (501) 682-6211. Phone on days when legislation is imminent.
2

Step Two

Use the Human Rights Campaigna??s action center (see Resources) to send messages to your representatives. Utah has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, so you will face heavy opposition.
3

Step Three

Visit the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Web site (see Resources) and volunteer or join its "Monitor and Mobilize" team. You can also use the site to track events and access publications.
4

Step Four

Utah has elected a few openly gay state legislators such as Senator Scott McCoy and Representative Jackie Biskupski. When an openly gay candidate runs for office, actively work for their election.
5

Step Five

Visit the Utah ACLU Web site (see Resources). The ACLU is an active combatant in the fight for gay rights. Through the organization's site, you can track bills and access links to Utah legislators.

6

Step Six

Track events and pending legislation. Read "QSaltLake," Utah's gay news and entertainment magazine. You will find it free in restaurants, bars, coffee shops and other outlets. You can also download a copy in PDF format (see Resources). Pay attention to the media. Find out where supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage are speaking and rally for or against them.
