How to Be an Advocate for Same Sex Marriage in Arkansas

Introduction

Whether you are gay or lesbian or just support the rights of your fellow citizens, and you live in Arkansas, there are things that you can do to advocate for gay marriage.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Steps

1

Step One

Write letters to your congressional representative and senators. Letters exert more impact than emails and faxes, and writing a letter will increase the chance that your representative will actually see your words. Arkansas is one of the states that has changed its constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Language in the law restricts spousal rights for gay partners. So you face an uphill battle.
2

Step Two

Use the Human Rights Campaigna??s action center (see Resources) to send messages to your representatives.
3

Step Three

You can leave messages for legislators in the Senate by calling (501) 682-2902. Or call the House of Representatives at (501) 682-6211. You can suggest that your representative vote "yes" or "no" on same-sex marriage legislation. Phone on days when legislation is imminent.
4

Step Four

Visit the Arkansas ACLU Web site (see Resources). The ACLU is an active combatant in the fight for gay rights. Through the organization's site, you can track bills and access links to Arkansas legislators.
5

Step Five

Visit the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Web site (see Resources below) and volunteer or join its "Monitor and Mobilize" team. You can also use the site to track events and access publications.
6

Step Six

Show up. When you hear that someone is speaking for or against same-sex marriage in your area, rally in support or opposition.
