How to Apply for a Burning Man Art Grant
Introduction
In keeping with the fundamental Burning Man principle of radical self-expression, the project provides about 30 art grants annually as partial support for specific art projects. Most art grants fund art that reflects the Burning Man art theme for that year, although some grants support non-theme art. The annual budget is about $400,000. Grants over $30,000 are rare. Anyone may apply.

Plan Your Art Grant Proposal
Steps
1
Step One
Plan your art project a year before the festival. This will give you 5 months to work with your ideas before the submission deadline.
2
Step Two
Go to the Burning Man Art Grants webpage to print out and begin working with the grant guidelines and proposal format 2 months before you apply (see Resources below).
3
Step Three
Understand that at a minimum, your proposal must include a cover sheet, physical description, itemized budget, capacity statement of your capacity to build, install, and clean up your project, timeline, description of your compliance with the "Leave No Trace" principle, and detailed drawings and diagrams.
Submit Your Art Grant Proposal
Steps
1
Step One
Email one proposal to artgrants@burningman.com, with name of your project, in caps, as the subject. Do not cc anyone. The artgrants email address is automatically delivered to all members of the grant committee.
2
Step Two
Submit your proposal electronically, because it will be printed out with multiple copies for the grant committee. Use Word or PDF (preferred) files for documents of less than 1 megabyte. Larger files may be posted on a website and you may submit one URL for the entire file. Make it easy on the grant committee and they will start out liking you.
3
Step Three
Mail non-digital drawings and maquettes to Burning Man Art Grants, PO Box 884688, San Francisco, 94188 or drop them off, with an appointment, at 1900 Third Street, San Francisco.
Create Your Art
Steps
1
Step One
Complete an Art Installation Questionnaire regardless of whether you secure funding, if you plan to create your art installation. This can be found at the Burning Man website (see Resources below). The questionnaire will help you secure appropriate placement for your installation in Black Rock City, and the process will also provide you with critical information about your responsibilities as a Burning Man artist.
2
Step Two
Create your art project and make it a stunning part of Burning Man whether you receive funding or not. A great project may help you to secure funding in a future year, and will certainly help you build an audience.
