Introduction

Reading is a pastime that improves vocabulary and builds your imagination! Once you read one book, you'll be eager to begin another. People have been reading for centuries and there is no sign of reading becoming uncool or out of date. Being literate will also amaze your friends and help you get dates!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need

  • A book
  • Glasses if you need them
  • A bookmark if the book is long or if you read REALLY slow
  • A good lamp or light source
  • A comfortable and quiet place to sit

Steps

1

Step One

Go to your local library or, if you have one, a bookshelf in your house or apartment. If you are at a library go to a section that contains books about things you are interested in. Some books are true (non-fiction) and some books are make-believe (fiction).
2

Step Two

So, have you found a bookshelf with books on it yet? I hope so, because it is a crucial step in the process of reading a book. For step two you'll need to have your thinking cap on. Look over the titles on the spines of the books in front of you. You can also look at the designs and colors. Is there anything that catches your eye? Go ahead and pick out several books that you might be interested in reading.
3

Step Three

Let's hope that you've chosen some great books! If you haven't, your goal of reading a book might not be as pleasurable as you'd hoped. Now, you've got you stack of possible books to read. Find a comfortable chair or person to sit on and begin reading the first 3 pages of each book. This is how you'll narrow down which book you'll read and which books you'll put back on the wrong shelves at the library.
4

Step Four

Did you find a good one? I certainly hope so. Otherwise, its over and you'll have to start all over at step one. Now that you've found your book and discarded the others take it to the counter and check it out and take it home. Or, if you were lucky enough to find a book without leaving your place of residence you can go ahead and open it up.
5

Step Five

Ok, lets read a book! Finally, after all of that messing around we finally get to the good stuff. It is a good idea to start on page 1 and go to the following pages (1,2,3,4, etc...). You wouldn't want to know the ending before starting would you? I really don't think so.
6

Step Six

Have you a good story or biography in your hands or what?!? You should notice that the story is progressing as you turn each page. I like exciting books because they keep me turning the pages. Some people like books that go at a slower pace. Its really up to you and your personal tastes. Now, while you are reading make sure to keep the characters (people or animals usually) of the story straight in your head. It would suck if you got them mixed up. Also, if you can't read the whole book in one sitting (all at once) make sure you have something to mark what page you were on so that when you pick the book up again later you don't lose your place and then you'd have to start all over again or look at all the pages to see which ones you've read already.

Overall Tips & Warnings

  • Try picking a book that someone reccomends to you. Ask your friends (if you have some) if they have ever read a book and if they know of some you might like. If they really are your friends then they probably have similar tastes as you do.
  • Make sure you are reading with your corrective lenses on if you need them! It can make your eyes water or hurt if you don't. If you are nervous about people seeing you wearing nerdy glasses try wearing contacts or just reading alone in your room where no one can see you.
  • Picking a book that is too long on your first try may only serve to frustrate you and keep you from attempting to read books in the future. Choose something that is the right number of pages becasue choosing a really big book just to impress others isn't a good idea because you should just be yourself and read for enjoyment, not to impress others.
