Book Your Train Travel from New York to Montreal
Steps
1
Step One
Call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak's web site in the "Resources" section below. On the web site, you can book your train reservations via Amtrak's Fare Finder. You can also navigate the site if you have a PDA, Blackberry or other handheld device. The trip from Penn Station in New York to Central Station in Montreal takes approximately 10 hours.
2
Step Two
If you ordered your tickets online or by phone, pick them up at a ticket agent or at one of the Quik-Trak kiosks that can be found at many Amtrak locations (you'll need to enter your reservation number). If you've booked your trip far in advance, you can also request that your tickets be mailed to you.
Tips & Warnings
- Check the Amtrak web site (see link below) for special promotions and deals. For instance, children under 16 travel at half price, and even sometimes for free.
- Be a good tipper. Tipping attendants is appropriate on the train, especially when you've reserved a sleeper.
- Bring a blanket. Surprisingly, Amtrak doesn't provide free blankets, even for sleeper cars. You can also purchase one on board for just a few dollars.
- Consider staying overnight at one of the destination stops along the way, such as Saratoga Springs or Ticonderoga. You can always board the train again the next day (at no additional cost) to resume your trip.
- Be aware that Amtrak policy prohibits children under 14 from traveling on the train to Canada without being accompanied by a parent or legal guardian--no exceptions.

2
Step Two
Ride the commuter rails from Central Station. Central Station is Fare Zone 1, one of two downtown terminals for the commuter train system.
Tips & Warnings
- Note that Central Station is locally known (in French) as Gare Centrale. It is located beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in downtown Montreal.
Overall Tips & Warnings
- Brush up on your high school French, or invest in an English-French dictionary. Montreal is a bilingual city, and being prepared with a few key phrases, greetings and ways to say "thank you" will help you get around.
